In a sling....again!

Most of you know that Braedon loves football. He's been practicing with the varsity high school team since March. He was scheduled to be the only freshman starter. I say "was" because last week, Braedon got hit in a sack and then started experiencing the same shoulder problems he'd had in March after hitting a tackling bag incorrectly. One of his coaches said he'd dislocated his arm and put it back in, and that seemed to be the end of it until last week. He was hurting and swollen so bad that I got an appointment with his orthopedist. Took Braedon to the orthopedist yesterday. We'd had to wait all weekend and I had called Monday morning at 8am and throughout the day to see if they had cancellations so I could get him in sooner, but no luck. So, our appointed time came and he was looked at by the same doctor that took care of him when he had his spiral fracture on his left arm when he was 10. Dr. Joan Price is very nice and gentle with Braedon...so, it was a good choice for us to go directly to her and Dr. Mark Foreman for his care. We found out that Braedon is "double-jointed" in his shoulders. No, he only has one shoulder joint like everyone else, but his tendons and ligaments are VERY loose. The following explains it a bit...he has MDI and is double-jointed.

Young Athletes

Athletes who compete in sports that involve overhead activities may have a loose shoulder or multidirectional instability (MDI). These athletes, stretch out the shoulder capsule and ligaments, and may develop chronic shoulder instability. While they may not completely dislocate the joint, the apprehension, or feeling of being about to dislocate, may prevent their ability to play these sports.

"Double-Jointed" Patients

Patients with some connective tissue disorders may have loose shoulder joints. In patients who have a condition that causes joint laxity, or double-jointedness, their joints may be too loose throughout their body. This can lead to shoulder instability and even dislocations.

It's hereditary...gets it from his momma, apparently. Not just one shoulder, BOTH shoulders. His right shoulder just got the trauma from hitting Charles in football practice.

So, he's in a sling and the arm is immobilized for the next two weeks. He's got to ice it and be aggressive in his rehabilitation or he won't be able to go back to playing football as soon as we'd like. He's got his first PT appt scheduled for the 30th of July with a therapist who specializes in this kind of shoulder injury and issue. He's young and a guy, so Braedon will probably get along with him fairly well. (see update at the side)

Chad Cota Football Camp 08

This is a cool stadium. It is located at the southeastern tip of the campus of South Medford High School. It seats 9,250 people. It is the home for both the South Medford High School and North Medford High School football programs. South Medford also uses the stadium for it's soccer and track programs.

Every year a football game between cross town rivals South Medford High School and North Medford High School is played. It is one of the biggest events held at Spiegelberg, the Black and Blue Bowl. It is played for the bragging rights for the year until the contest is held again the following season. Since both teams share the stadium there isn't really a "home field advantage." People from all over Medford flock to Spiegelberg to witness this game.

Thanks wikipedia for info.....

Jetboat Trip with Cougars

It all happened on Thursday, 29 May 2008. The 5th grade classes of Rogue River Elementary School (the "Cougars") got treated to a Hellgate Jetboat excursion as part of their graduation celebration activities. I am authorized by the district to chaparone, so I got to go, too! I'd never been on a Jetboat trip, even though I'd lived here a good portion of my life growing up. Both Karl and Braedon got to go when he (Braedy) graduated 5th grade, so Baylei made sure I got to accompany her.

We got to the boat dock around 10am.

Our school was one of many getting to go on an adventure that day, but our classes fit into just one boat. We had "Bo" as our guide and the man knew how to drive! Four chevy engines and all that horsepower...weeeewhooooooo!!!

Baylei and I sat three rows from the back of the boat. Unfortunately, I think, I was on the end...spray central. We sat next to Baylei's best friend, Kayla and her mom, Sharon who took all the pictures (except the big jetboat pic, but she scanned it for me.) Thanks, Sharon!!

After we left the dock, we went upstream just a touch and turned around...then Bo kicked up the engines and we went under Caveman Bridge where there was a photographer just waiting to take our picture....you can see just about everyone in this picture including Bo...wait....he's driving without his hands???

Baylei isn't one for smiling a lot, but she loved it!! Can you tell?

The kids got very wet as we were able to do 360° spins several (I think it was close to 10) times. We even helped rescue another boat when a stick got stuck in their rudder. Hellgate Canyon was gorgeous! The whole trip was great! Not so great? The wet behind afterwards, but I'd still go again.

After the two hour ride, we went over to Riverside Park and enjoyed lunch with our kids. It was a very nice afternoon with my daughter.
